arts + Culture

The arts bring life to rural communities, but making them thrive requires building support systems for artists. These systems include bringing new people into the arts, space for focused creativity, offerings to inspire artists, or new ways to make a living.

PROGRAM GOALS

1

Provide support that sustains the arts as a livelihood and profession.

2

Improve access to the arts for everyone in rural communities.

3

Bring people together around the arts.

ARTS PROJECTS

THE SHIP YARD

The Ship Yard brings emerging musicians to perform on The Alluvion stage and provides them with industry connections, photography and video of their performance, and mentorship to support their career development. Hello, all you garage performers, dream-chasers, question-askers, footing-finders, craft-builders, and launchers. This program is for you.

LONG memory project

The Long Memory Project’s mission is to cultivate the passing down of our community’s stories. Not just the ones considered worthy enough to make headlines and history books, but the small acts of courage, action, good governance and community building—the songs, poems and stories that help us understand where we came from, who we are, and what we envision for our future—both regionally and beyond. This pop-up artist residency program gathers elders to share their stories with artists who create works inspired by the experience.

ANTRIM WRITERS SERIES

The Antrim Writers Series features a Michigan writer in Antrim County each season of the year. The writers are featured in two events, a reading from their work and a writing workshop. Writers then engage in a place-making project, writing a piece about a local place that will eventually adorn a sign in that space.

artists residencies

Artist residency programs give artists much-needed time to step away from life’s other distractions to focus on the creative process. Over the years, Crosshatch has had residencies of many kinds.

Currently, we’re hosting our Long Memory Project pop-up residency and planning for a dedicated space.
