Buckwheat, Bees, Bacon, and Barley: Small-scale row crops, on-farm livestock, and cover cropping

  • Hill Valley Farm 6064 Stolt Road Charlevoix, MI, 49720 United States (map)

On this tour, we will discuss ways to increase the diversity of farm products and income streams. Ben and Brittany McMurray will share their experiences in year-round stewardship for pastured pigs. They will showcase synergies between crop production and livestock.

More about the Farmers:

Hill Valley Farm specializes in the entire life cycle of pasture-raised heritage pigs (farrow-to-finish) and non-GMO grains. As beginning farmers, Ben and Brittany McMurray have learned much from multi-generational farmers along their street. This sharing of neighbor-to-neighbor knowledge, tools, and time has supported them to incorporate small-scale row crops as a part of what they produce (non-GMO field corn, barley, and cover crops). To nurture an apiary housed on the farm, the McMurrays have engaged in conservation cover planting of diverse wildflowers through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
