Twilight Tour: Bluestem Farm

  • Bluestem Farm 4218 Adams Road East Jordan, MI, 49727 United States (map)

The 100-Layer Flock on Pasture

Get a snapshot of a farm other than your own and get a close up view of Bluestem Farm, a CSA farm in Antrim County specializing in organic vegetables and pasture-raised pork, eggs, and chicken. Bluestem Farm was recently awarded a SARE grant to study the most efficient size for a pasture-raised layer flock. This Twilight Tour will focus on their trials with 3 different flock sizes. The tour will also showcase their newly designed "chicken ships," which move smaller, 100-layer flocks efficiently without the use of machinery.

Twilight Tours are an opportunity for area small farmers to learn from one another’s practices through a series of tours and farmer-led workshops. Farm tours are particularly valuable for beginning farmers as a way to build relationships, observe a wide variety of management styles and find support from a peer network. Upcoming Twilight Tours will have a unique theme, depending upon the farm. Following the tour will be plenty of time for Q&A.
